Dental Crowns (Caps) in Edmonton

If you have a damaged tooth that is not lost, a dental crown, often referred to as a cap, can be a suitable solution to restore its shape, function, and appearance. Dental crowns are recommended in various situations, such as after a root canal treatment, when a tooth has a large filling, or when a tooth is broken or significantly damaged.

A dental crown is essentially a hollow, artificial tooth designed to cover and encapsulate a damaged or decayed natural tooth. This crown not only restores the tooth's integrity but also shields it from further harm. Additionally, dental crowns can be used to cover teeth that are discolored or misshapen. Once a tooth has been treated with a crown, it closely resembles and functions like a natural tooth.

Who Performs Dental Crown Procedures?

If you require a dental crown, the procedure may be conducted by Dr. Mandeep Kanwar, or you may be referred to a prosthodontist. A prosthodontist is a dentist who has undergone specialized postgraduate training in prosthodontics, a field of dentistry that focuses on the restoration and replacement of natural teeth and oral tissues with artificial substitutes.

How Is a Dental Crown Procedure Performed?

The process of getting a dental crown typically involves several steps:

  1. Dr. Mandeep Kanwar administers a local anesthetic to ensure you are comfortable during the procedure.
  2. Your tooth that requires restoration is carefully shaped and filed down to create space for the crown.
  3. An impression of the prepared tooth and nearby teeth is taken. This impression serves as a model for creating your custom crown. The crown is crafted using restorative materials based on this impression, ensuring it fits your mouth perfectly.
  4. While your final crown is being fabricated, a temporary crown is placed over the prepared tooth to protect it. This temporary crown is created from an impression taken before the tooth was reshaped and may not perfectly match the final crown in terms of shape and color.
  5. During your subsequent visit, the temporary crown is removed, and the final crown is placed. Dr. Mandeep Kanwar checks to ensure the crown fits properly in terms of size, shape, color, and bite alignment. If everything is in order, the crown is cemented securely in place.

While these are the general steps involved in getting a dental crown, it's essential to remember that your tooth's specific condition and your oral health may require additional treatments or adjustments. This could extend the duration or number of visits necessary for your dental crown procedure.
